Seminar on Intellectual Property Protection "Guidelines for Researchers & Industry" at Karachi

Pakistan Scientific and Technological Information Centre (PASTIC) Sub Centre, Karachi in collaboration with Faculty of Civil Engineering, NED University of Engineering & Technology, Karachi organized a one-day seminar on “Intel lectual Property Protection, Guidelines for Researchers and Industry” on May 28, 2014 at the Civil Engineering Video Conference Hall NED University, Karachi. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Afzal Haque, Vice Chancellor, NED University, was the Chief Guest, and Prof. Dr. Muhammad Akram Shaikh Director General, PASTIC was the Guest of Honour. The aim of the seminar was to create awareness about. Intellectual Property Rights and patenting of research amongst scientists, entrepreneurs and the SMEs and to deliberate on the importance of patents & their benefits in economic development. Expert speakers were invited from law firms. About 61 participant repnesenting academia, Industry, R&D organizations and the legal professionals attended the seminar. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Afzal Haque, Vice Chancellor, NED University said that IPRs cover assets (both tangible and intangible) which arise from people's creativity and innovation, or discovered / prospected & evolved over the year in particular geographical locations, while IPRs are now recognized as an important asset that qualifies for protection, its enforcement has always been a major problem. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Akram Sheikh, Director General, PASTIC, said that Indigenous knowledge is based on power of innovation. This is the need of the hour to promote innovat ion and patentability. He also said that the main objective of the workshop was to create awareness among scientific researchers and industrial community about the importance of Intellectual Property, especially Patent as a tool for economic growth and wealth creation.
