Director General PASTIC visits the

ofce of Federal Minister for Science

& Technology

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Akram Shaikh, Director
General PASTIC visited the office of Federal
Minister for Science & Technology on July 31, 2018
and briefed the Minister about the acivities and
services of PASTIC. Federal Minister showed keen
interest in the services of PASTIC, and desired to visit
PASTIC shortly. During the briefing, Minister was
fully appraised about PASTIC. Director General,
PASTIC also presented a book to the Honorable
Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Prof.
Muhammad Yusuf Shaikh.

Training Workshop on Open Source
Technologies in Libraries

Training workshop on “Make Your
Research Life Easier With Mendeley Tool”
held at PASTIC National Centre

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Akram Shaikh, Director
General PASTIC was the Guest of Honor of the event.

Main objectives of the training workshop were to
create awareness about Open Source Technology, and
to create guidance for installation and utility of Open
Source Software in libraries.

Working library professionals from different cities of
Pakistan such as Skardu, Peshawar, Bhakar, Azad
Kashmir, Multan, Lahore and Karachi attended this
training workshop.

At the end of workshop, participants praised the
efforts of PASTIC generally, and efforts of Syed
Habib Akhter Jaffri, Project Coordinator especially,
for uplifting the capabilities of library professionals,
by organizing such kind of training workshop.
Moreover, participants requested that such kind of
training workshops may also be organized in different
parts of the country.

Pakistan Scientific & Technological Information
Centre (PASTIC) Islamabad organized a two-day
training workshop dated July 27-28, 2018, in
collaboration with Pakistan Librarians Welfare
Organization (PLWO), a non-profit organization for
the promotion of library & information professionals
in Pakistan, regarding Open Source Technologies in

Libraries.

PASTIC organized a two day training workshop on
“Make Your Research Life Easier With Mendeley
Tool” which was held from July 18-19, 2018 at
PASTIC National Centre, Quaid-e-Azam University

Campus, Islamabad. The objective of this workshop
was to build the capacity of young researchers and to
enhance their skills in literature search, citation,
sharing and discovering of new research. Mr.
Muhammad Adnan and Ms. Neelum Batool were the
resource persons of the workshop. 20 participants
f r o m Q u a i d - e - A z a m U n i v e r s i t y a n d P I D E
participated in this training workshop.

This workshop was part of a series that are regularly
organized by PASTIC to train the young researchers
on modern ICT tools and techniques useful in
research. There are many citation tools available for
helping researchers in citation during completion of
their thesis. The Mendeley application owes a unique
position among these tools being free, smarter and
user-friendly. Besides it provides an excellent
p l a t f o r m w h e r e r e s e a r c h e r s c a n s e a r c h
jobs/fellowships, research funds, find research
groups, search literature etc. Moreover it is a cross-
platform application (Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone)
that helps researchers to manage and annotate their
scientific paper collections. Citation data from its
cloud library can be accessed across multiple devices
e.g., Laptop, PC, iphone etc. Mr. Zaheer Nasir,
Manager (Training) and Mr. Saif ullah Azim,
Principal System Analyst distributed certificates
among the participants.

PASTIC organized a three-day training
workshop on SPSS at PASTIC National
centre Islamabad to enhance researcher's
capabilities

Mr. Muhammad Usman Database Administrator,

PASTIC was the Resource Person of the training.

Forty three research scholars from Quaid-e-Azam

University and PIDE Islamabad, participated in the

training program. At the end of the training program,

the participants.

IPO DELEGATION VISITS PASTIC
FOR FOLLOW UP OF TISC

After the establishment of the Technology and
Innovation Support Centre (TISC) at PASTIC
National Centre, Islamabad under its Technology
Information Services Section (TIS) and Six TISC
supporting Centers at Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar,
Quetta, Faisalabad and Muzaffarabad, a follow up
visit of IPO-Pakistan was undertaken regarding TISC
activities.

The delegation comprised of Mr. Muhammad Ismail,
Director IPO-Pakistan and Ms. Faryal Javed, IPO
TISC-Officer. The delegation was briefed about the
progress of TISC by the focal person of PASTIC-
TISC, Dr. Syed Aftab Hussain Shah, Sr. SIO. It was
informed that PASTIC-TISC will comprise of 7
officers, one at PASTIC National Centre, Islamabad
and one each at six TISC supporting Centers at

Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta, Faisalabad and
Muzaffarabad. The TISC web content was prepared
and uploaded on the PASTIC website with the
assistance of IT Section, which can be accessed by
visiting the URL:

The delegation was also informed that the publicity
news about PASTIC-TISC has been sent by email to
our more than 5000 registered members of PASTIC
by IT Section. One page pamphlets have been printed
which will be distributed among the researchers to
boosting the patent awareness during the events
organized by PASTIC and its 6 Sub-Centers. The
pamphlets will also be displayed on notice boards of
different departments of universities and Chambers
of Commerce & Industries, R& D Organizations. The
standees have been displayed at PASTIC National
Centre Library, Islamabad and PASTIC Six TISC
supporting Centers at Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar,
Quetta, Faisalabad and Muzaffarabad. Visitor and
reporting forms have been developed for keeping
record. Later on, the delegation met the Director
General PASTIC, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Akram
Shaikh who fully assured his cooperation to promote
the TISC activities together with the IPO Pakistan
and HEC. The IPO delegation visited the
Reprography and Library Sections and activities of
mutual interest were discussed.
