Multi-stakeholder conference on
Media and Information Literacy (MIL)
for prevention of violent extremism held
at Islamabad
A two-day multi-stakeholder conference on Media
and Information Literacy (MIL) for prevention of
violent extremism was jointly organized by United
Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural
Organization (UNESCO), IFAP focal point PASTIC
and Media Matters for Democracy at Ramada,
Islamabad on 17-18 September, 2019. Panel
discussions, consultative workshops and expert talks
were part of this event.
UNESCO Representative for Pakistan, Ms. Vibeke
Jensen, in her welcome speech, briefed the
participants about UN Secretary General's strategy
and plan of action on hate speech and UNESCO's
guidelines on MIL for policy makers & teachers. She
said the many valuable suggestions from the
participants of the conference will provide a good
starting point and direction to prevent violent
extremism in Pakistan”.
The Chief Guest Shafqat Mahmood, Federal Minister
for Education and Professional Training, was the
Chief Guest at the conference. In his keynote address,
he said that the formal education system must teach
Pakistani youth and children for effective and ethical
use of digital media and new information
technologies. He mentioned MIL can develop critical
thinking skills and respect for cultural diversity
among young Pakistanis.
Director General PASTIC, Prof. Dr. Muhammad
Akram Shaikh, the chair of the National Committee,
UNESCO Information for ALL Programme (IFAP),
presented an overview of the IFAP and PASTIC. He
said the conference intends to be a stepping stone for
developing policies and launching initiatives related
to media and information literacy in Pakistan.
The conference was attended by government
officials, civil society representatives, members of
the academia and media professionals from across
the country.

A seminar on “Importance & Protection of Rights on
Intellectual Property of Scientists” was organized by
PASTIC-Peshawar and ORIC, University of
Peshawar on January 17, 2019.
The primary goal of the seminar was to orient the
researchers about the essentials of Intellectual
Property Rights (IPRs), Trade Mark and of process of
filing of Patent application.
A total of 88 scientists from different faculties of
UOP, Swabi University, UET Mardan, UET
Peshawar, Sarhad University Peshawar, Islamia
College University Peshawar & the Agriculture
University Peshawar attended the session.
Mr. Zahoor Ahmad (Manager ORIC-UOP), Mr.
SaifUllah Khan (Deputy Director IPO Pakistan) and
Dr. Zia Obaid (Director, ORIC-UOP) were the key
resource persons and delivered comprehensive talks /
lectures related to the topic. While, Deputy Director
PASTIC Peshawar conveyed a detail introduction
about PASTIC S&T Services for Researchers. Very
interactive question answer session was held towards
the end of every talk. At the end of the session shields
and certificates were distributed among resource
persons, organizers and participants, while 26
researchers filled the demand form, for the
bibliographic service.
Building Innovative Pakistan 4th
Invention to Innovation Summit 2019
at University of Balochistan, Quetta
PASTIC Sub Center Quetta collaborated with
University of Balochistan Quetta, PSF, ORIC, IRP,
GIL, UMT, HEC and AFAQ in organizing the 4th
Invention to Innovation Summit 2019 on September
24-25, 2019 at University of Balochistan, Quetta. 500
Scientists and 15000 Students enrolled in the
Summit.
In the inaugural session held on September 24, 2019,
In-Charge PASTIC Sub-Centre Quetta, Mr. Abdul
Khalique Sial, delivered a detailed presentation
(through PASTIC website) to explain the participants
about PASTIC activities. In the opening ceremony,
Mr. Aman Ullah Yaseenzai, Governor of Balochistan
was Chief Guest along with Guest of Honour, Mr.
Nawabzada Tariq Magsi, Provincial Minister,
Government of Balochistan. Whereas in the closing
session of the Summit, held on September 24, 2019
Mr. Jam Kamal, Chief Minister Balochistan
presented shields, certificates, cash awards among
the organizers and participants.

PASTIC Sub Centre Karachi arranged a two-day
training workshop on "Data Analysis through STATA
Software" on September 24-25, 2019 at PASTIC Sub
Centre Karachi. 14 Participants from various
universities including Karachi University,
Department of Genetics, Biostatistics, Biochemistry,
Zoology, Baqai Medical University, Jinnah Medical
& Dental College, Dow Medical University, Federal
Urdu University, Benazir Bhutto University Lyari,
and Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur, attended
the training workshop.

Ms. Sara Wahab, Resource Person from Jinnah
Sindh Medical University delivered training on
STATA Software. In the inaugural session, Deputy
Director PASTIC Sub-Centre Karachi, Mr. Abdul
Fatah Shaikh, delivered a detailed presentation
(through PASTIC website) to explain the
perticipants about PASTIC activities. Whereas in the
closing session of the workshop, shield was
presented to the Resource Person, and certificates
were distributed to the participants.
