The Technology and Innovation Support Centre
(TISC) at PASTIC National Centre, Islamabad has
been established at its Technology Information
Services Section (TIS) and Six TISC supporting
DESKs at Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta,
Faisalabad and Muzaffarabad through an MoU with
IPO-Pakistan. The program is part of collaboration
with IPO-Pakistan, HEC, Pakistan under the
assistance of World Intellectual Property
Organization (WIPO).
ESTABLISHMENT OF TECHNOLOGY
AND INNOVATION SUPPORT CENTRE
(TISC) at PASTIC
Major Services of PASTIC-TISC
TISC at PASTIC National Centre, Islamabad and its
six DESKs will provide following quality technology
information services to the innovators to help them
exploit their potential and to create, protect, and
manage their intellectual property (IP) rights:
Access to online patent and non-patent
(scientific and technical) resources and IP-
related publications;
Assistance in searching and retrieving
technology information;
Training in database search;
On-demand searches (novelty, state-of-the-
art and infringement);
Monitoring technology and competitors; &
Basic information on industrial property
laws, management and strategy, and
technology commercialization and
marketing.

PASTIC organizes Training Seminar on
“Keyword Planning and Searching in
Digital Era: Key Challenges” at UAAR
PASTIC IT Section organized one day Training
Seminar “Keyword Planning and Searching in
Digital Era: Key Challenges” on March 14, 2018 at
Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University,
Rawalpindi in collaboration with faculty of Social
Sciences. Sixty (60) students and faculty members
participated in the seminar. Mr. Saifullah Azim,
Principal System Analyst presented the talk on the
topic and also presented the PASTIC services. At the
end of the Seminar, Dr. Abdul Saboor Dean faculty of
Social Sciences paid his special thanks to PASTIC
and resource person for collaboration with UAAR in
organizing the event.

Moreover it is a cross-platform application
(Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone) that helps
researchers to manage and annotate their scientific
paper collections. Citation data from its cloud library
can be accessed across multiple devices e.g., Laptop,

Training workshop on “Make Your
Research Life Easier with Mendeley Tool”
held at PASTIC
PASTIC organized a training workshop on “Make
Your Research Life Easier with Mendeley Tool”
during 28-29th March 2018 at PASTIC National
Centre, Quaid-e-Azam University Campus,
Islamabad. The objective of this workshop was to
build the capacity of young researchers and to
enhance their skills in literature search, citation,
sharing and discovering of new research. Dr.
Maryum Ibrar Shinwari, Senior Scientific
Information Officer (PASTIC) / Mendeley Advisor,
was the resource person of the workshop. 14
Participants from Quaid-e-Azam University, Arid
Agriculture University, and PIDE participated in this
hands on training workshop.
This workshop was part of the series of training
workshop that are regularly organized by PASTIC to
train the young researchers on modern ICT tools and
techniques useful in research. There are many
citation tools available for helping researchers in
citation during completion of their thesis. The
Mendeley application owes a unique position among
these tools being free, smarter and user-friendly.

PASTIC Sub-centre Karachi organized a one day
Training workshop on “How to Write a Good
Synopsis “on March 8, 2018 at PASTIC Sub-Centre
Karachi. 18 participants attended the workshop. Dr.
Ms. Samiya Saleem from Federal Urdu University of
Arts, Science & Technology delivered presentation
during the workshop. At the end of the workshop,
certificates and shields were distributed among the
participants and Resource Person.

attended the workshop. Mr. Sajid Aleem from Jinnah

PASTIC Sub-centre Karachi organized one day
Training workshop on “Data Analysis using SPSS”
on March 28, 2018 at PASTIC Sub Centre,
Karachi.19 participants attended the workshop. Ms.
Sara Wahab from Jinnah Sindh Medical University
Karachi delivered a presentation during the
workshop. At the end of the workshop, certificates
and shields were distributed among the participants
and Resource Person.

Training workshop on Library
Automation at AARI Faisalabad
Three-days hands on training workshop on “Library
Automation by using KOHA ILS Package” was
organized by PASTIC Sub-centre, Faisalabad from
6th to 8th March at Ayub Agriculture Research
Institute- Faisalabad. The key objective of the
training was to familiarize the researchers with
fundamentals of citation.
The Chief Guest was Dr. Abid Mehmood, Director
General, AARI during inaugural session, and Dr.
Ibrar Ahmad, Director Post Harvest AARI was
Chief Guest at closing Session. 35 participants
participated in the workshop. The resource persons
were Syed Habib Akhter Jaffri, Principal Librarian,
PASTIC, Mr. Fahad Ubaid, PASTIC, and Mr.
Nadeem Sohail, FAST-Lahore.
At the end Certificates, Shields and Souvenirs were
distributed among participants, resource persons,
organizer and chief guest.
Training workshop on “SPSS” at
CASVAB (UoB), Quetta
PASTIC Sub-centre Quetta organized two days
training workshop on “SPSS” in collaboration with
Center for Advanced Studies in Vaccinology &
Biotechnology (CASVAB), University of
Balochistan Quetta, from March 15-16, 2018 at
CASVAB (UoB), Brewery Road, Quetta.

Seminar on “Role of Digital Library and Use
of Information Resources” at CIIT Lahore

The target participants of the workshop were M.Phil
and Ph.D students. A total of 50 participants attended
the workshop. Mr. Munir Ahmed, Pakistan Standard
Quality Control Department, Quetta, was the
resource person. Mr. Abdul Khalique Sial, Incharge,
PASTIC Sub-centre Quetta, briefly talked about
PASTIC/PSF S&T information services. Over 50
participants including scientists and other officers of
CASVAB attended the workshop.
The Certificate Award Ceremony was held on March
16, 2018. Mr. Muhammad Masood Tariq Kiani,
Director (CASVAB) was the Chief Guest and Mr.
Azam Kakar, Dean (Life Sciences), University of
Balochistan was the Special Guest at the closing
ceremony. They distributed the certificates and
shields among the participants, resource person and
organizers.
PASTIC Sub-centre Lahore, Pakistan Librarians
Welfare Organization (PLWO), and COMSATS
Institute of Information Technology (CIIT), Lahore,
jointly organized a seminar on “Effective Use of
Information Resources” on March 14, 2018 at
COMSATS Institute of Information Technology
(CIIT), Lahore. More than 40 M.S./M.Phil and Ph.D.
students, librarians and researchers attended the
seminar.
In the opening remarks, Mr. Ali Raza Khan, Deputy
Director (STI), PASTIC and Guest of Honor of the
seminar shed light on the importance of the seminar.
He informed the participants, that such seminar
helps the students, scholars and information
professionals in improving their information and
research skills and helps them to identify, locate and
use information resources effectively. He also
highlighted the objectives and activities of PASTIC.

Dr. Muhammad Tariq Najmi was the resource person
of the seminar and conducted detailed session on
effective use of information resources, searching
skills and use of HEC digital library. In this
interactive session, he shared the latest cutting-edge
techniques about the effective information retrieval
and how a digital library can facilitate researchers in
this regard. He also conducted a mock session to
answer the different queries raised by the
participants.
Dr. Rubina Farooq, Chairperson Department of
Chemistry, Acting Head, Pharmacy Department and
Convener Library Affairs was the Chief Guest. While
addressing the participants she said that such types of
practical sessions are very important for the capacity
building of the researchers.
In the concluding remarks, Mr. Zaheer Ahmad
Secretary General, Pakistan Librarians Welfare
Organization (PLWO) thanked the Resource Person,
Chief Guest and Guest of Honor for sparing their
valuable time for the event. He also acknowledged
the services of COMSATS and PASTIC for
organizing this successful and well planned seminar.
Seminar on “Thesis Writing Skills”
at Govt. Superior Science College
(GSSC) Peshawar
A One-day Seminar on “Thesis Writing Skills” was
jointly organized by Zoology Department GSSC-
Peshawar & PASTIC Peshawar on March 14th, 2018
at Govt. Superior Science College (GSSC) Peshawar,
A total of 50 students from the Department of
Zoology, Chemistry, Maths, Pak Studies and Political
Science along with senior faculty members attended
the session. Mrs. Ghazala Ali Khan, Deputy Director
PASTIC Peshawar was the key resource person of the
seminar.

Seminar on Role of Research & Innovation
for Shifting to Technical Textile at FCC
Faisalabad
A One-day Seminar on “Role of Research &
Innovation for Shifting to Technical Textile” was
organized by PASTIC Faisalabad and FCCI on
March 15, 2018 at Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce
& Industry, Faisalabad. Technical textiles are the
high performance purpose built structures having
vast range of applications including aerospace,
military, marine, medical, construction, geo-textile,
transportation and other high-tech applications.
Although the textile sector is the backbone of
Pakistan's economy, Pakistan still lags behind in
technical textile sector. Whereas technical textiles
and value added products have become the fast
growing industries. So it is very important to create
awareness among the industrialist so that they may
contribute to the growth and development of the
country in this sector.
The chief guest was Engineer Rizwan Ashraf, Ex-
President FCCI, and guest of honor was Ch.
Muhammad Nawaz Ex- President FCCI. 35

PASTIC Services Awareness Seminar
PASTIC arranged the following awareness seminar
at the following Institute:
Zoology Department, University of
Peshawar
PASTIC Sub Centre. Peshawar organized a seminar
on PASTIC Services Awareness at Zoology
Department, University of Peshawar on March 6,
2018. A total of 61 research students attended the
session.
PASTIC Services Stalls
Mr. Tafakhar Ali Asdi, Member Finance, Pakistan
Science Foundation, visited Pakistan Scientific and
Technological Information Center (PASTIC), on 21st
March, 2018. Dr. Muhammad Akram Shaikh,
Director General PASTIC, welcomed the Member
Finance. He was taken around the various sections of
PASTIC. Member Finance visited PASTIC Library,
IT Section, Reprography Section and other Technical
Sections. Later on, in a meeting with Director
General and Senior Officers of PASTIC, Member
Finance was briefed about PASTIC and its activities.
Member Finance appreciated the services and
activities of PASTIC. He provided guidelines for
strengthening the Reprographic Section of PASTIC,
and its improvement. He also provided guidelines for
utilization of funds effectively for uplift of the
organization. He assured his cooperation for
improvement of all financial matters.

Convention Centre Islamabad
Mr. Saifullah Azim, Principal System Analyst,
participated in National Police Summit and
Innovation Expo on 14thmarch 2018 at Convention
Centre Islamabad. He visited the different stalls for
identifying the appropriate opportunities from this
expo and areas of collaboration.
PASTIC National Center and its sub-centers
regularly organize information services stalls all over
the country, wherein PASTIC publications are
displayed and membership forms/pamphlets are
distributed, and the visitors are briefed about
PASTIC services. In continuation of this regular
