Seminar on “Importance of Intellectual

Property Rights in SMEs” at Sheikhupura

Chamber of Commerce & Industry

PASTIC Sub-center Lahore organized a seminar on

“Importance of Intellectual Property Rights in

SMEs” on April 16th, 2018 at Sheikhupura Chamber

of Commerce & Industry (SCCI). Mr. Ehtisham

Rasool, Vice President, highlighted the importance of

Intellectual Property Rights and said World

Intellectual Property Day is celebrated every year on

April 24 to raise awareness of how patents,

copyrights, trademarks and design impact on our

daily life.

Mr. Ali Raza Khan, Deputy Director (STI), PASTIC,

delivered briefing about PASTIC services and

informed that recently PASTIC has established

technology and Innovation Support Centre (TISC)

desk's which provides different technological

information services to innovators to help them

exploit their potential and to create, protect and

manage their Intellectual Property Rights.

The Chief Guest, Mr. Manzoor Ul Haq Malik,

highlighted the importance of protecting Intellectual

Property Rights which were first recognized in the

Paris Convention for the protection of Industrial

properties in 1983, and one convention for the

protection of literary and artistic works in 1986.

Thereafter World Intellectual Property Organization

was established in 1967 to protect the Intellectual

Property Rights.

Mr. Nasir Mahmood Zahid, Deputy Director IPO

explained the importance of Intellectual Property

Rights in SMEs so that participants could take full

advantages of Intellectual Property Rights.

In technical sessions, Mr. Zahid explained the

industrial property, copyrights, patents, and

protection available to these rights. He also explained

the trademark, trademark registry. At the end of the

seminar, shields were distributed among the

distinguished guests.

Workshop on Use of Emerging

Technologies in Research: Google Apps

PASTIC Sub Centre Lahore, organized a one-day

workshop with collaboration of Lahore Medical and

Dental College Lahore, on “Use of Emerging

Technologies in Research: Google Apps”, on Friday

27th April 2018, at Lahore Medical and Dental

College, Lahore. A total of 45 participants from

Dr. Saima Rubab department coordinator introduced

and overviewed the workshop program. After this Dr.

Asad Majeed Khan, Academic Director LMDC,

delivered his key note address and said that in this

technology era without the use of technologies we

can't do anything. Mr. Ali Raza Khan, Deputy

Director (STI), PASTIC Lahore, sub centre

introduced PASTIC and its services.

LMDC, others universities and libraries participated

in this workshop.

Mr. Nadeem Sohail, Manager Library, organized

technical session theoretically and practically on

Google Apps for researchers. Participants were

provided hands on practice on Google searching

strategies, google scholar, google drive, google docs,

sheets and slides.

Mr. Nadeem Sohail, Manager Library presented the

Google Forms, Google clouds search and practically

trained the participants about these apps. At the end,

shields were distributed among guests and resource

Personal Branding through Soft Skills

Development" at ICCBS Karachi

PASTIC Sub Centre Karachi arranged a 5-day

training workshop on "Librarians Personal Branding

through Soft Skills Development" from 9-13 April

2018, at L.E.J, International Centre for Chemical &

Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi,

in collaboration with Pakistan Library Club (PLC). In

the inaugural session, Prof. Dr. Farzana Shaheen,

Incharge ICCBS Library, was chief guest in the

workshop. Participants from different universities /

colleges / institutions from all over Sindh, attended

the workshop. Mr. Habib Akhter Jaffri Principle

Librarian & Project coordinator, from PASTIC

National Centre Islamabad, briefed about the library

project, and Mr. Abdul Fatah Shaikh, Deputy

Director PASTIC Sub Centre Karachi, delivered

briefing about PASTIC services.

Training workshop on “Make your

research life easier with Mendeley Tool”

at PASTIC National Centre

PASTIC organized a training workshop on “Make

your research life easier with Mendeley Tool” during

April 11-12, 2018 at PASTIC National Centre,

Quaid-e-Azam University Campus, Islamabad. The

objective of this workshop is to build the capacity of

young researchers and to enhance their skills in

literature search, citation, sharing and discovering of

new research. Dr. Maryum Ibrar Shinwari, Senior

Scientific Information Officer (PASTIC) / Mendeley

Advisor, was the resource person of the workshop. 35

Participants from Quaid-e-Azam University and

PIDE participated in this training workshop.

The resource persons involved in the training were

Ms. Tooba Ahmad, Mr. Syed Habib Akhter Jaffari,

Mr. Noor uddin Merchant, Mr. Muhammad Anwar

Chaoudhry and Mr. Tariq Najmi.

During the closing session the Chief Guest was Prof.

Dr. Iqbal Chaoudhry, Director International Centre

for Chemical & Biological Sciences (ICCBS). Dr. M.

Akram Shaikh, Director General PASTIC National

Centre, Islamabad and Mr. Sameen Kardar, Joint

Director, Pakistan Library Club (PLC), were Guests

of Honor in the workshop.

Seminar on "How to Write Research

Proposal for Getting Funds" at PASTIC

Sub Centre Karachi

PASTIC Sub Centre Karachi arranged a two-day

Seminar on "How to Write Research Proposal for

Getting Funds" on April 4-5, 2018 at PASTIC Sub

Centre Karachi. A total of 35 participants attended the

workshop. Resource Person was Dr. Samiyah

Tasleem, from Federal Urdu University of Arts,

Science & Technology, Karachi.

PASTIC organized a three-day training workshop

from April 2-4, 2018 in collaboration with Faculty of

Social and Educational Sciences at Pir Mehr Ali Shah

Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi, on

“Research tools and techniques to enhance quality of

research”. Forty five research scholars, both students

and faculty members, participated in the training

programme. At the end of the training programme,

the Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Sarwat N. Mirza

initiative to uplift the researcher's capability through

launching the need based training progamme at their

door step.

This workshop was part of a series that are regularly

organized by PASTIC to train the young researchers

on modern ICT tools and techniques useful in

research. There are many citation tools available for

helping researchers in citation during completion of

their thesis. The Mendeley application owes a

unique position among these tools being free,

smarter and user-friendly. Besides it provides an

excellent platform where researcher can search

jobs/fellowships, research funds, find research

groups, search literature, etc. Moreover it is a cross-

platform application (Windows, Mac, Linux,

iPhone) that helps researchers to manage and

annotate their scientific paper collections. Citation

data from its cloud library can be accessed across

multiple devices e.g., Laptop, PC, iphone, etc. At the

end of the workshop, Principal System Analyst, Mr.

Saif Ullah Azim distributed certificates among the

participants.

PASTIC organized a Sindh Consortium meeting at

PASTIC Sub Centre Karachi on April 13, 2018,

which was attended by Senior Library professionals.

The core objective was to develop Library

Consortiums of S & T and R & D libraries of

Pakistan.

The Director General PASTIC Prof. Dr. M. Akram

Shaikh presided over the meeting. He informed

about the development project, “Modernization of

PASTIC National Science Reference Library for

Effective Resource Sharing among S & T libraries in

Pakistan”. Participants, who were from various

universities and research institutions, shared their

recommendations on the topic. They appreciated the

decision taken by PASTIC to form Library

consortium because the consortium would address

many resource sharing issues. The Project

Coordinator, Syed Habib Akter Jaffri, presented

details of the project in his presentation.

PASTIC Sub Centre Karachi

PASTIC Sub Centre arranged a one-day training

workshop on “Data Collection & Sample Size” on 18

April 2018, at PASTIC Sub Centre Karachi. A total

of 18 participants attended the workshop. Resource

Person was Mr. Sajid Atif Aleem, Jinnah Sindh

Medical University.

Workshop on Smart Literature Search,

Skills at SBBWU-Larama Campus, Peshawar

One day training, titled "Smart Literature Search,

Thesis and Internship Report Writing Skills” was

held at SBBWU-Larama Campus, Peshawar on

April 26, 2018 for capacity building of the research

scholars and staff of Zoology Department. During

the opening ceremony Ms. Mahrukh Khattak (HOD,

Zoology Dept), emphasized that the proper literature

search is key to write a good thesis / report. Ms.

Peshawar Sub Center, in her opening remarks

emphasized that PASTIC continuously puts efforts

for capacity building of the researchers through

different trainings throughout the country.

The objectives of the workshop were capacity

building of scientists for overcoming hindrances

faced during scientific & technical information

dissemination and developing effective

communication skills and confidence in engaging

with public. Moreover, the workshop aimed at

providing evidence-based reporting on science and

technology. The programme started with Recitation

from the Holy Quran. Welcome address was

delivered by Dr. Tariq Jan, Director ORIC KUST.

The workshop was attended by large number of

faculty members, students and researchers. Dr.

Faizan Majeed, Associate Professor, Department of

Biotechnology, University of Science & Technology

Bannu (USTB) gave an excellent presentation on

“Communicating Science to Non- Scientific

Audience/Society.” Later on, Sayyed Paras Ali,

Editor Technology Times delivered presentation on

“Challenges & Opportunities to Science

Communicators.” Mr. Faisal Nadeem, a local media

person also highlighted the need of effective

communication to non-scientists.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Akram Shaikh, DG PASTIC

stressed that there is a great need to bring non-

scientists closer to the scientific inventions and their

benefits to the society. Prof. Dr. Jamil Ahmed, Vice

Chancellor KUST, Kohat praised the organizers for

organizing such a demanding task for awareness of

scientific endeavours to the researchers, scientists

and society. At the end of ceremony, PASTIC Crest

shields were given to distinguished speakers and

During the technical session, Dr. Rabea Ejaz from

SBBWU-Larama Campus Peshawar, delivered a

very comprehensive presentation about Smart

Literature Search, by practically involving the

participants to retrieve data from different websites.

She also taught the students that how they can

retrieve data from HEC digital library.

researchers through different trainings throughout

Mr. Muhammad Usman, Database Administrator,

PASTIC National Center, Islamabad was the

resource person of the training workshop. The

training included a series of lectures involving Data

Collection Methods, Analysis Techniques and Basics

of Statistics. Afterwards, 6 sessions were held for

hands-on training on SPSS (Statistical Package for

Social Science).

Ms. Ghazala Ali Khan (DD PASTIC), presented a

detail presentation on Thesis and Internship Report

Writing Skills. 98 students filled their form for

bibliographic/documentation service as per need of

their topic. At the end of the session certificates were

distributed among the participants.

Training on SPSS: Quantitative

Data Research Analysis at PFI

Peshawar

Two Days Training, titled "Research Tools and

Techniques (SPSS)" was held at Pakistan Forest

Institute from 12-13 April 2018 for capacity building

of the faculty staff of PFI. During the opening

ceremony Dr. Memoona (Director Education)

emphasized that the usage of statistical analysis tools

should be maximized during the research process.

Such tools can help in fastening the research process,

as well as provide accurate results to the researchers.

Seminar on CPEC Opportunities and

Challenges at Sargodha

April 2018

PASTIC Sub Centre, Faisalabad in collaboration with

Sargodha Chamber of Commerce and Industry

(SCCI) organized one day seminar on CPEC

opportunities and challenges on 10th April, 2018 at

Sargodha. 70 well known industrialists and executive

members of Sargodha Chamber of Commerce and

Industry (SCCI) attended the seminar.

(SCCI) was the Chief Guest of the event and Mr.

Muhammad Aqil Khan Additional Director (STI),

PASTIC Islamabad was guest of honor. Sheikh

Muhammad Naveed Iqbal, President, SCCI gave

inaugural remarks. Muhammad Aqil Khan

Additional Director (STI), PASTIC Islamabad

briefly highlighted the importance of seminar and the

role of PASTIC regarding its information services

with reference to trade and technology information

and its coordination with Chamber of Commerce and

Industry. Two resource persons Dr. Liaquat Ali Shah

and Mr. Ahsan Abbas from Centre of Excellence for

CPEC (PIDE) Islamabad conducted the seminar. The

resource persons presented overview of CPEC,

economic issues related to CPEC and other issues

concerning industrial establishments, industrial

zones, special economic zones, trade and technology,

industrial cooperation etc. with reference to the

opportunities and challenges associated with CPEC

projects.

The purpose of organizing this seminar was to

appraise the SMEs and industrial sector about the

challenges and opportunities associated with CPEC

and to provide a platform for discussion about its

significance and impact as well as the core issues

related to finance, economics, governance,

management, etc. entailing this project. The seminar

was focused on the importance and scope of CPEC

from industrial point of view with reference to the

socio-economic development of country.

from April 27-28, 2018, at the Women University

PASTIC Services Stalls

PASTIC National Center and its sub-centers regularly

organize information services stalls all over the country,

wherein PASTIC publications are displayed and

membership forms/pamphlets are distributed, and the

visitors are briefed about PASTIC services. In

continuation of this regular activity following stalls were

organized during the month of April 2018 at the following
