Workshop  on  “Tools  for  Media

Information Literacy (MIL)” at PASTIC

National Center, Islamabad

PASTIC,  the  UNESCO-  Information  for  all 
Programme  (IFAP),  coordinating  body  in  Pakistan 
and  Individualland  Pakistan,  jointly  organized  a 
Workshop on “Tools for Media Information Literacy 
(MIL)” on October 22-23, 2019 at PASTIC National 
Center, Islamabad to equip media personnel with the 
skills to critically analyze the information received 
from various sources and learn techniques to produce 
ethical  and  truthful  information  and  media  content 
themselves. 

Pakistan  Scientific  &  Technological  Information 
Centre (PASTIC), being the coordinating body of the 
UNESCO-Information  for  All  Programme  (IFAP) 
organized the second National Committee Meeting 
of UNESCO-IFAP on October 22, 2019 at PASTIC 
National  Center.  The  IFAP  was  established  by 
UNESCO with objective to build a free information 
s o ciety,   f o cu s in g   o n   in f o r matio n   liter acy, 
preservation & access to information, and the ethical 
& societal consequences of ICT developments. The 
meeting mainly focused on devising a road map for 
promotion  of  MIL  concept  through  IFAP  at  the 
national level.

The meeting was chaired by Dr. Muhammad Akram 
Shaikh, IFAP NC Chair / Director General, PASTIC 
and  was  attended  by  print  &  electronic  media 
personnel, civil society, policy makers, librarians and 
IT  professionals  from,  COMSATS,  MoST, 
UNESCO,  Individualland  Pakistan,  Media  Matters 
for Democracy, AIOU, Technology Times, PASTIC 
and the National Library of Pakistan. 

Speaking at the inaugural session, Director General 
PASTIC,  Prof.  Dr.  Muhammad Akram  Shaikh  said 
that  this  workshop  is  part  of  the  UNESCO 
Information  for  ALL  Programme  (IFAP),  through 
which  skill  development  of  media  personals  for 
critical evaluation of information content is intended 
to  create  media  and  information  literacy  (MIL)  in 
Pakistan.

Training Workshop on "Basic Data Analysis
through R Software"

PASTIC National Centre, Islamabad & COMSATS 
University,  Abbottabad  Campus  jointly  organized 
two days training workshop on “Make Your Research 
Life Easier With Mendeley Tool” which was held on 
October  1-2,  2019  at  COMSATS  University, 
Abbottabad Campus. The objective of this workshop 
was to build the capacity of young researchers, and to 
enhance  their  skills  in  literature  search,  citation, 
sharing and discovering of new research. Dr. Maryam 
Ibrar  Shinwari  was  the  Resource  Person  of  the 
workshop.  40  participants  from  Department  of 
Microbiology,  Department  of  Biotechnology  and 
Department  of  Environmental  Sciences  of 
COMSATS  University,  Abbottabad  Campus 
participated in this training workshop. 
This workshop was part of a series that are regularly 
organized by PASTIC, to train the young researchers 
on  modern  ICT  tools  and  techniques  useful  in 
research. The Mendeley application is free, smarter 
and  user-friendly,  besides  it  provides  an  excellent 
p l a t f o r m   w h e r e   r e s e a r c h e r s   c a n   s e a r c h 
jobs/fellowships,  research  funds,  find  research 
groups, search literature, etc. Moreover it is a cross-
platform  application  (Windows,  Mac,  Linux, 
iPhone),  that  helps  researchers  to  manage  and 
annotate  their  scientific  paper  collections.  Citation 
data  from  its  cloud  library  can  be  accessed  across 
multiple devices, e.g., Laptop, PC, iphone, etc. 

Training  Workshop  on  “Make  Your
Research Life Easier With Mendeley Tool” 

PASTIC  Sub-Centre  Karachi  arranged  a  one-day 
training Workshop on "Basic Data Analysis through 
R Software" on October 29, 2019 at PASTIC Sub-
Centre  Karachi.  15  Participants  from  various 
universities  and  departments  such  as  Sindh 
Agriculture University, Tandojam, Shaheed Zulfiqar 
Ali  Bhutto  Agriculture  College  Dokri,  Larkana, 
Central Cotton Research Institute, Sakrand, Benazir 
Bhutto  Shaheed  University,  Lyrai,  University  of 
S i n d h ,   J a m s h o r o ,   D E S TO ,   D e p a r t m e n t   o f 
Microbiology,  University  of  Karachi  and  Bahria 
Medical  &  Dental  College,  attended  the  training 
workshop.  Mr.  H.M  Amir  Anis,  Resource  Person, 
from  Jinnah  Sindh  Medical  University  delivered 
training on R Software.

A b d u l   F a t a h   S h a i k h ,   d e l i v e r e d   a   d e t a i l e d 
presentation  (through  PASTIC  website)  to  explain 
the  perticipants  about  PASTIC  activities,  and 
presented  shield  to  the  Resource  Person,  and 
certificates  were  distributed  to  the  participants.

Techno SUIT Expo 2019 at SUIT Peshawar

A one-day seminar was organized on "Professional 
Ethics  and  Confidence  Building"  on  October  22, 
2019  at  University  of  Agriculture  Faisalabad 
Library. 45 participants (Librarians of colleges and 
universities from Faisalabad district) participated in 
the seminar.Prof. Dr. Masood Sadiq, Dean Faculty 
of  Food  Science  &  Technology,  University  of 
Agriculture  Faisalabad,  was  the  Chief  Guest.  The 
Resource Persons were Dr. Tariq Najmi, Librarian, 
COMSATS  University  Lahore,  Dr.  Salman  Bin 
Naeem, Assistant  Professor,  Islamia  University  of 
Bahawalpur, and Mr. Nadeem Sohail, Ph.D Scholar 
Library Science from Bahawalpur University.

PASTIC  Sub-Centre  Peshawar,  ORIC  Sarhad 
University  Peshawar,  Gulls  Association  Pakistan, 
with other partners and sponsors jointly organized 
one day activity titled TechnoSUIT Expo 2019, on 
October  17,  2019  at  Sarhad  University  of 
Information Technology (SUIT), Peshawar. Projects 

were displayed by final year students of all faculties 
of Sarhad University Peshawar, and were evaluated 
by renowned scientists of different Universities of 
KPK. The Vice President Sarhad University, Brig. 
(Retd) Javed Tipu, was the Chief Guest of the Event, 
whereas  Dr.  Khalid  Khan,  Director-Directorate  of 
S c i e n c e   a n d   Te c h n o l o g y   ( D O S T )   K h y b e r 
Pukhtunkhwa  graced  the  closing  session.  Shields 
and certificates were distributed among the winners 
at the end of the event.

Workshop  on  “Writing  a  Research
Thesis/Project Synopsis” at Peshawar

PASTIC Sub-Centre Peshawar, ORIC-University of 
Peshawar & NCEPC-University of Peshawar jointly 
organized a 2-day workshop on “Writing a Research 
Thesis/Project Synopsis” on October 21-22, 2019 at 
NCEPC-UOP.  74  participants  from  various 
departments  of  UOP  and  other  universities  of 
Peshawar,  participated  in  the  workshop.  Dr. 
Muhammad  Zafar  Iqbal,  Prof.  University  of 
Peshawar  and  Ms.  Ghazala  Ali  Khan,  Deputy 
Director  PASTIC  Sub-Centre  Peshawar,  were  the 
Resource  Persons.  Both  of  them  talked  about  the 
research synopsis writing, according to the format of 
university  of  Peshawar.  Prof.  Dr.  Abdul  Naeem, 
Director  NCEPC,  University  of  Peshawar,  graced 
the  closing  session  and  distributed  certificates 
among all the participants.

Workshop on SPSS at Peshawar

A 2-day workshop on SPSS was jointly organized by 
PASTIC Peshawar and Office of Research Innovation 
&  Commercialization  (ORIC)-UET  Peshawar.  47 
Participants  from  University  of  Peshawar,  UET-
Peshawar,  Shaheed  Benazir  Bhutto  Women 
University  Peshawar,  Agriculture  University 
Peshawar, Khushal Khan Khattat University Karak, 
National  Centre  of  Excellence  in  Physical 
Chemistry-UOP,  Islamia  College  University-
Peshawar,  UET-Mardan,  Sarhad  University 
P e s h a w a r   a n d   P e s h a w a r   M e d i c a l   C o l l e g e 
participated in the workshop.
Dr. Faisal Khan, Assistant Professor, Quaid-e-Azam 
Commerce College, University of Peshawar and Dr. 
Fahim  Ullah  Khan,  Assistant  Professor  Hazara 
University, Mansehra, were the Resource Persons.
Dr. Khizar Azam, Registrar-UET Peshawar and   Dr. 
Tariq  Mahmood  Khalil  (Manger,  ORIC-UET 
Peshawar)  were  the  Chief  Guests  in  the  opening 
ceremony. While, Dr. Shakoor (Director ORIC) was 
the  Chief  Guest  in  the  closing  ceremony,  during 
which  shields  and  certificates  were  distributed 
among Resource Persons and participants.

PASTIC Services Awareness Seminar 

PASTIC  Sub-Centre  Quetta  arranged  PASTIC 
Services Awareness Seminar on October 16, 2019 at 
the Institute of Management Sciences, University of 
Balochistan,  Quetta.  Mr.  Abdul  Khalique  Sial,  In-
Charge  PASTIC  Sub-Centre  Quetta,  delivered  a 
detailed  presentation  (through  PASTIC  website)  to 
explain the perticipants about PASTIC activities

Kashmir Black Day Rally

Mr. Abdul  Khalique  Sial,  In-Charge  PASTIC  Sub-
Centre  Quetta,  organized  Kashmir  Solidarity  Day 
Rally on October 25, 2019 with the colloboration of 
University of Balochistan Quetta. 

The following stalls were arranged by PASTIC:-

October  23-25,  2019  at  Hamdard  University, 
Karachi.
