Sub-surface Geophysical Imaging of Solid Waste
Dump Site: Implications for Soil and Ground Water

PASTIC in collaboration with National Centre of
Excellence in Geology and Department of Agriculture
Engineering, UET Peshawar arranged one-day seminar
on “Subsurface Geophysical Imaging of Solid Waste
Dump Site: Implications for Soil and Ground Water'' on
May 26, 2023 at UET Peshawar.

The objective of the seminar was to enhance the
knowledge of young researchers about rise of residual
materials that might not be immediately useful and have
to recycled, salvaged or re-used immediately otherwise
will pollute the environment.

Dr. Muhammad Younis Khan NCE In Geology,
University of Peshawar and Dr. Khurram Sheraz
Department of Agriculture Engineering, UET Peshawar
were the resource persons of the seminar. Main highlights
are as follows:

Awareness of wide spread environmental issues caused
by residual material particularly in Peshawar and
surroundings.

Facts about existence of leachate that travels from the
source to the natural environment, areas close to landfills or
dump sites that are more likely to have contaminated soil
and ground water.

Knowledge of health issues raised because of the odor
and fumes released by solid waste that can cause chronic
illnesses like cancer as well as infections of the eyes,
nose, throat, along with ailments related to skin, blood
and respiratory systems.

Dr. Liaqat Ali, Director NCE In Geology-UOP and Guest
of the Honor, Ghazala Ali Khan Additional Director
PASTIC/PSF along with senior faculty of Department of
Agriculture Engineering UET Peshawar including Prof.
Dr. Zia ul Haq, Prof. Dr. Shahazad, Dr. Ajmal Khan and
Dr. Abdur Raziq Afridi Department of Geography
Islamia College Peshawar graced the occasion.
Dr. Liaqat Ali, Prof. Dr. Zia-ul-Haq and Ghazala Ali Khan
also shared their views with participants.

from all provinces of the country who travelled from far-
flung areas of Pakistan to share their views in the areas
of food and nutrition.
PASTIC collaborated in the said event by publishing
Abstract Books for this conference.

Khalil, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology,

Department of Microbiology, Federal Urdu University
of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST) Karachi,
organized a one day Seminar on “Zoonotic Infections:
Emerging Public Health Threats & Monkey Pox Virus
outbreak” at Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science
and Technology (FUUAST) Karachi on May 18, 2023.
The Seminar was participated by more than 100
researchers including HOD's, faculty members &
students etc.

Sidra Abid Syed, Chairperson Bio-medical Engineering
Department, SSUET.In the inaugural session Commodore
(R) Engr. Syed Sarfraz Ali, Registrar SSUET, said that
over the past few decades, we have witnessed remarkable

Ms. Afsheen Tariq, Assistant Director (STI), PASTIC
Karachi gave a briefing on PASTIC services and the
role of PASTIC in capacity building, newly develop
databases, portals and Pakistan Science Foundation role
towards research.
Resource persons Dr. Nazeer Hussain Kalhoro, Director
General, Sindh Institute of Animal Health Karachi,
Livestock & Fisheries Department, and Government of
Sindh gave presentation on Zoonotic infection towards
public health. Dr. Saeed Khan, Associate Professor of
Molecular Pathology, Dow University of Health
Science gave detail presentation on Monkey Pox virus.
A Productive question/answers session was followed at
the end.

International DNA Day symposium on
“One Humanity, Many Genomes”

PSCK with the collaboration of Department of
Biomedical Engineering, Sir Syed University of
Engineering & Technology (SSUET) Karachi, orga-
nized one day symposium on “One Humanity, Many
Genomes” in order to celebrate “International DNA
Day” at SSUET on May 31, 2023.The Seminar was
participated by more than 200 researchers including
HOD's, faculty members & students etc.

Awareness Seminar on “Role of Statistics in Decision
Making” was held on May 30, 2023 at Govt College
University Faisalabad. Around 110 participants
including Directors, HODs, PhD Researchers, and
Students from various faculties participated. Session was
started with the recitation from The Holy Quran followed
by welcome address by Prof. Dr. Abdul Rauf Bhatti,
Director ORIC. Remarks and introduction to PASTIC
services was delivered by Muhammad Hasnain,
Additional Director (STI), PASTIC Faisalabad. The key
note speaker/resource person was Muhammad Arif,
University of Agriculture Faisalabad.

In the closing session chief guest, Prof. Dr. M Hidayat
Rasool, Registrar/Acting VC GCUF, distributed souvenir
and certificate to resource person and participants. He
also thankedand appreciated PASTIC activities.
Participants/Scientists also appreciated and thanked to
PASTIC efforts to hold a successful Seminar/workshop.

Ms. Afsheen Tariq, Assistant Director (STI), PASTIC
Karachi focused on PASTIC activities and its role in
dissemination of scientific studies and information
technology.
Prof. Dr. Shamim Akhter, University of Karachi a
Guest of Honor emphasized the role of insulin as one
of the best products of genetic engineering.
Resource Person Dr. Syeda Sadaf Akber, Dean Faculty
of Allied Health Sciences, Malir University of Science
& Technology, explained the role of DNA as the base
of life and the changes associated with DNA have
increased the risk of having a child with developmental
disability or developing diseases such as cancer or
heart disease.

Another Resource Person Dr. Bilal Azmi, Assistant
Professor of Dow University of Medical Sciences,
Karachi explained Genetic variations as a kind of
alteration and the DNA content to be used for forensic
evidence.

The 2nd International Conference (Hybrid mode) on
“Recent Approaches in Plant Sciences (RAPS-2023)''
was organized by the Education University Lahore.
The main theme of the conference covered a wide
range of Botany (Biodiversity, Ecology, Physiology,
Plant Microbe Interaction, Mycology etc.); Zoology
(Physiology, Pharmaceutics, Biochemistry, Medical
Sciences, etc.); Agricultural Biology (Agronomy, Plant
Breeding, Soil Sciences, Food Sciences, Climate
change, Plant Pathology, Smart Agriculture) and
Biotechnology, Bioinformatics and Microbiology
( M e d i c a l M i c r o b i o l o g y, F o o d M i c r o b i o l o g y,
Environmental Microbiology, Bioinformatics, etc.).
Inauguration was done by Professor Dr. Kauser
Abduallah Malik (Hilal-I-Imtiaz, Sitara-I-Imtiaz,
Tamgha-I-Imtiaz), Forman Christian College (a
Chartered University) Lahore, University of Education.
The conference was started by the recitation of The
Holly Quran & Naat Shareef. During welcome address,
Prof. Dr. Abrar Hussian (Chairperson, Department of
Botany) warmly welcomed all guests. Prof. Dr. Talat
Naseer Pasha (Hilal-I-Imtiaz, Sitara-I-Imtiaz), Vice
Chancellor, University of Education, Lahore addressed
all audience.

on “Protection of Groundwater Resources” at Pakistan
Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) on
May 16, 2023.The event was jointly organized by
PCRWR, SEGMITE in collaboration with Pakistan
Science Foundation. The Session was started with the
recitation of The HolyQuran, followed by a welcome
address by Prof. Dr. Viqar Husain, Convener
SEGMITE, & Environmental consultant. Speakers Dr.
Ghulam Murtaza, Regional Director, PCRWR,
Karachi, Dr. Ali Asghar Mahasar, Deputy Director,

Sindh,briefed PASTIC Services, its research database.

researchers to share innovative ideas so that the

guest Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Prime Minster
of Pakistan inaugurated the Exhibition, and acknowl-
edged their valuable contribution to the industry.
Around 200-plus exhibitors, Pakistan's leading indus-
tries and 350-plus industry specialists from different
countries like South Africa, China Australia, Egypt,
France, Germany, Iran etc participated in the TEXPO.
