The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has introduced a draft licensing framework to
regulate Inflight Telecommunication Satellite (ITS) services in the country. The proposed policy
defines the operational and legal requirements for
companies intending to offer onboard internet and
mobile connectivity to passengers on domestic
and international flights. According to the draft,
multiple operators will be allowed to provide these
services under a non-exclusive licensing
model.Broadband and cellular connectivity will be
available during flights, although mobile services
will only operate when aircraft are above 3,000
meters. The framework also requires companies
to collaborate with registered satellite operators and Pakistan’s licensed telecom networks.
Licenses will remain valid for ten years, subject to renewal approval, with an initial fee of
$10,000. Operators must establish local gateway systems, route traffic through domestic
infrastructure, and comply with data protection, monitoring, and national telecom regulations.
USF Begins Bidding Process for Next-Generation Broadband Project
The Universal Service Fund (USF) is set to launch its Next Generation Broadband for
Sustainable Development (NG-BSD) initiative to enhance internet connectivity in
underserved areas of Pakistan. The project will
initially cover three districts Bahawalpur,
Mirpurkhas, and Kolai Palas with each district
offered as a separate package in the upcoming
bidding process. The initiative aims to improve
digital access in regions where reliable internet
services are still limited, supporting sectors such
as education, healthcare, and local businesses.
USF plans to implement the project through a
reverse auction mechanism, allowing eligible
companies to compete by offering the lowest subsidy requirement for service delivery.
Selected operators will receive government assistance to establish and manage broadband
infrastructure in these areas. Improved broadband connectivity is expected to support invest-
ment, boost local businesses, and expand digital access for residents in underserved regions.

PTA Unveils Draft Licensing Policy for Inflight Satellite Services
A collaboration between LUMS University and Allied Bank is set to explore the potential of
robotics and human robot interaction (HRI) in modern banking services, with planned trials in
customer-facing environments. The agreement
was formally signed between Group Head of
Digital Transformation and Innovation at the
bank, and LUMS, Associate Professor and
Director of a research laboratory. As part of the
initiative, a Pepper humanoid robot has been
installed at the university’s lab to support the
development of robotics-based banking applica-

Pakistan’s First GPUaaS Launched by MyCloud
MyCloud by Multinet has achieved a significant milestone in Pakistan’s digital ecosystem by
launching the country’s first GPU-as-a-Service (GPUaaS) platform. The new solution is
designed to support enterprises, developers, and
innovators by providing access to high-
performance computing resources for artificial
intelligence workloads within Pakistan. As AI
adoption expands globally, the need for scalable,
secure, and efficient computing infrastructure
has become increasingly important. MyCloud’s
GPUaaS addresses this requirement by offering
locally hosted infrastructure that enables faster
processing, lower latency, and compliance with
national dataregulations. Built on enterprise-level GPU systems and supported by high-
availability data centers, the platform uses a Kubernetes-based architecture to ensure flexibil-
ity and scalability. It also strengthens data sovereignty by keeping sensitive information within
national boundaries while maintaining global security standards. The service is expected to
accelerate AI development across sectors such as fintech, healthcare, telecom, and e-
commerce in Pakistan.

MoITT Rolls Out NODE Digital Data Ecosystem
The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) has initiated work on
establishing a National Open Data Ecosystem (NODE) to support the development of
Pakistan’s digital economy. The proposed sys-
tem aims to improve the accessibility and usabil-
ity of government data for citizens, businesses,
and researchers by presenting it in a structured
and organized format. Officials believe this
initiative will enhance transparency, encourage
innovation, and promote data-driven decision-
making across multiple sectors. To implement the
project, the ministry has invited proposals from
both local and international organizations,
seeking diverse expertise and global best practices. A pre-proposal consultation session is
planned for mid-May, while final submissions are expected by mid-June. The evaluation
process will focus on technical strength alongside cost considerations, with greater weight
given to implementation capability. Supported by the World Bank under the Digital Economy
Enhancement Project, NODE is viewed as a key step in Pakistan’s broader digital transforma-
tion agenda.

Technology and Creativity Combine in vivo Pakistan’s Youth Program
Vivo Pakistan, in partnership with SOS Children’s Villages Pakistan, has successfully com-
pleted the second year of its three-year CSR initiative “Capture the Future 2026,” first launched
in 2025. The program aims to nurture creativity
and self-expression among children through
mobile imaging technology, enabling them to tell
stories from their own perspectives. This year’s
activities were held at SOS Children’s Villages
and included a two-day training workshop for
participants from across Pakistan. Using vivo
smartphones, children explored photography
skills by capturing portraits, nature, animals, and
architecture. Under the guidance of photographer
and mentor, participants received structured training in visual storytelling, lighting, and compo-
sition. The program is integrated into the SOS curriculum, while teachers are also trained to
continue monthly sessions through a “Train the Teachers” approach. The initiative will continue
into its third year, further strengthening creativity, confidence, and digital skills among young
participants.

P@SHA Meetup Highlights IT Export Strategy
The Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA) recently hosted the HBL P@SHA CXO
Meetup in Karachi, bringing together leading IT industry figures, government officials, and
policymakers to discuss ways to accelerate
Pakistan’s IT exports and strengthen digital
development. A special assistant to the Chief
Minister Sindh on IT highlighted that the provin-
cial government considers the IT sector a key
driver of economic growth. He reaffirmed commit-
ment to resolving industry challenges and pro-
moting digitization and e-governance across
departments. He also stressed the importance of
adopting emerging technologies, including
artificial intelligence, to remain globally competitive. The Chief Executive Officer of the
Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) emphasized expanding global outreach for IT firms
and improving infrastructure through IT parks and facilitation initiatives. He also mentioned
policy support for enhancing exports and international competitiveness. Industry leaders
underlined the importance of AI, 5G infrastructure, and improved ease of doing business.
They also stressed skill development, Special Technology Zones, and stronger collaboration
between government and industry to boost Pakistan’s digital economy and IT exports.
NADRA Technologies Limited (NTL) and Identity360 Global, a venture of EPL (Private) Ltd.,
have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on advanced AI-powered
digital identity and verification solutions in Pakistan. Under the partnership, the two organiza-
tions will explore technologies including touchless biometric verification, facial recognition,
optical character recognition (OCR), and digital onboarding systems for both public and
private sector applications. The collaboration aims to strengthen Pakistan’s digital ecosystem
by introducing secure and scalable identity frameworks. Officials say the initiative will help
improve customer onboarding, enhance fraud prevention, support regulatory compliance,

Pakistan Builds Tech Partnerships at Japan IT Week
Pakistan has inaugurated its pavilion at Japan IT Week Spring 2026 in Tokyo, marking its largest
participation to date. The pavilion was opened by Pakistan’s Ambassador to Japan and featured
12 IT companies showcasing services in software
development, cloud computing, cybersecurity,
fintech, and enterprise systems. The participation
is organized with support from the Trade
Development Authority of Pakistan, the Pakistan
Software Export Board, and JICA, aiming to
strengthen Pakistan’s footprint in the Japanese
technology market. Speaking at the event, the
ambassador said Pakistan’s IT sector is steadily
expanding and gaining international exposure. He
highlighted opportunities for collaboration with Japan under its Society 5.0 vision, where
Pakistani firms can contribute to digital transformation, system development, and efficiency
improvements, especially in response to labour shortages and an ageing population. The initia-
tive aims to build long-term partnerships, expand IT exports, and promote sustainable business
ties between Pakistan and Japan.

Pakistan Accelerates Tech Growth through AI Investment Plan
The Federal Government of Pakistan has announced a $1 billion investment in Artificial
Intelligence (AI) under the Ministry of IT and Telecom, marking a major step to strengthen national
technological capacity.In the first phase, the focus
will be on developing core infrastructure, including
high-performance computing systems and
Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) required for
advanced AI applications. These resources will be
made available to startups, businesses, and
researchers to promote innovation and wider AI
adoption across sectors. Officials said access to
computing power is essential for accelerating
research and development. The initiative will be
managed through the Ignite National Technology Fund, operating under the Ministry of IT and
Telecommunication. Authorities emphasized that the goal is to reduce barriers by providing
affordable access to computing infrastructure, enabling broader participation in AI development
and supporting growth in technology-driven industries across Pakistan.

Early Pancreatic Cancer Signs Detected by AI
Pancreatic cancer is often detected at an advanced stage, when treatment options are limited.
However, a recent study indicates that artificial intelligence may help identify early warning
signs years before tumors become visible on
standard scans. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic
in Rochester, Minnesota, developed an AI model
that detected subtle abnormalities in CT images
up to three years prior to diagnosis. Published in
the journal Gut, the study showed the system
outperformed radiologists by a factor of three in
spotting early indicators. The model was trained
on scans of patients who were later diagnosed
with pancreatic cancer and is currently undergo-
ing clinical evaluation. Experts believe the technology could help screen high-risk individuals,
such as those with diabetes or a family history of the disease. Since early symptoms are rare
and difficult to detect, this approach may significantly improve chances for timely intervention
and expand treatment options for patients.
Samsung Introduces OLED Innovations at SID 2026
At SID Display Week 2026 in Los Angeles, Samsung Display opened the event (May 5–7) by
presenting experimental screen technologies pointing toward next-generation smartphones,
wearables, and automotive applications. The
company highlighted major improvements in
brightness, color reproduction, and novel inter-
active capabilities. A key announcement was the
Flex Chroma Pixel OLED panel for future
smartphones, capable of reaching 3,000 nits in
High Brightness Mode for better outdoor visibil-
ity. It also covers 96% of the BT.2020 color
gamut, significantly higher than most current
devices. Samsung attributes this to its LEAD
technology and advanced materials that enhance efficiency, lifespan, and brightness.
Another innovation, the Sensor OLED Display, integrates organic photodiodes into a 6.8-
inch screen to monitor heart rate and blood pressure, while maintaining 500 PPI resolution
and privacy via Flex Magic Pixel.The company also showcased EL-QD and Stretchable
Display 2.0 for automotive use and future mobility concepts.
80x Cheaper Stable Iron Flow Battery Technology
Researchers in China have reported progress in iron-based flow battery technology that could
reduce the cost of renewable energy storage while improving lifespan. A team from the
Institute of Metal Research at the Chinese Academy of Sciences designed a new electrolyte
for an alkaline all-iron flow battery, enabling it to operate for more than 6,000
charge–discharge cycles without measurable capacity loss, according to findings published in
Advanced Energy Materials. Iron flow batteries have long faced challenges such as instability,
material degradation, and membrane crossover, which reduce efficiency and durability. To
address this, the researchers redesigned the negative electrolyte by synthesizing several iron
complexes and selecting a stable compound, [Fe(HPF)BHS]⁴⁻. Its molecular structure shields

Japan Tests Humanoid Robot Technology at Airports
Japan Airlines will begin testing humanoid robots as baggage handlers at Tokyo’s Haneda
Airport to help address labour shortages and rising passenger traffic. The trial, scheduled to
run from May through 2028, is being carried out
with Japan Airlines GMO Internet Group. The
robots, developed by Chinese company Unitree,
will assist ground crews by transporting luggage
and cargo on airport tarmacs. During a recent
demonstration, one of the robots was seen
loading cargo onto a conveyor belt beside a
passenger aircraft. Airport officials say the
machines are intended to reduce the physical
burden on workers while supporting airport
operations. Japan is facing growing workforce shortages due to its ageing population, even as
inbound tourism continues to increase. While robots will handle physically demanding tasks,
officials said important responsibilities such as safety management will continue to remain
under human supervision.
Researchers Create Reliable Dirt Battery
Researchers at Northwestern University have developed an improved soil-based microbial
fuel cell, or “dirt battery,” capable of reliably powering small sensors under both wet and dry
soil conditions. The technology is designed for
agricultural and environmental monitoring appli-
cations where conventional batteries often
require frequent replacement. Soil microbial fuel
cells generate electricity using naturally occurring
microbes that release electrons while breaking
down organic matter in the soil. Although the
concept has existed for years, inconsistent
performance in dry environments has limited
practical use. To overcome this challenge, the
research team redesigned the cell structure through a two-year testing process. The final
design uses a horizontal anode buried in soil and a vertical cathode partially exposed to air,
ensuring a steady supply of both moisture and oxygen. Outdoor tests showed the system
successfully powered moisture and touch sensors while operating longer than comparable
technologies, demonstrating strong potential for real-world agricultural deployment.

Energy-Free Cooling Could Transform Air Conditioning
Researchers at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology have developed an
electricity-free cooling system called Nescod that uses ammonium nitrate and solar energy as
a sustainable alternative to air conditioning. The
system aims to address rising global cooling
demand, especially in regions with limited elec-
tricity access. Nescod works by dissolving ammo-
nium nitrate in water, triggering an endothermic
reaction that absorbs heat and rapidly lowers
temperature. In tests, it reduced temperatures
from 25°C to 3.6°C within 20 minutes, showing
strong cooling performance compared to similar
salt-based systems. A key feature is its ability to
reset without electricity. Solar energy is used to evaporate water after each cycle, allowing
ammonium nitrate to crystallize and be reused. Researchers believe the system could be
applied in homes, food storage, and temperature-sensitive logistics, offering a low-cost and
sustainable cooling solution for hot climates.
New Brain Sensor Trial Planned by Science Corp
Science Corporation, a brain-computer interface company founded by former Neuralink
president Max Hodak, is preparing to test a new neural sensor in humans. The device is a pea-
sized chip containing 520 electrodes that will be
placed on the surface of the brain during routine
neurosurgery, rather than being inserted into brain
tissue. The first procedure is expected to be
carried out during an already scheduled opera-
tion, with clinical trials potentially beginning in
2027 under the supervision of a leading neurosur-
geon from Yale University. The company is also
developing a broader “biohybrid” brain interface
system that aims to integrate lab-grown neurons
with electronic components in the future. However, the initial human test will focus only on
safety and brain signal recording. Alongside this program, the company is advancing a retinal
implant called PRIMA, which has shown promising results in restoring vision in patients with

Advanced Crystal Technology Enabled by Light
Scientists at New York University have developed a light-based technique to control how
microscopic particles assemble into crystals,

Future Memory Technology Using Electron Orbitals
Korean researchers are working on a new concept of next-generation memory that could
significantly reduce heat generation in smartphones and laptops while improving speed and
lowering power consumption. The study, pub-

theoretical framework for controlling magnetism
using the orbital motion of electrons rather than
their spin, which has traditionally been the basis
of memory technology. Electron orbitals describe
the movement of electrons around an atomic
nucleus, and the researchers show that electric
current can directly interact with these orbitals in
magnetic materials. This interaction enables
more efficient control of magnetic properties, including anisotropy and rotational behavior.
Calculations indicate that orbital-based control may be stronger than conventional spin-based
methods, suggesting a shift toward orbital-driven semiconductor devices. The concept also
connects with emerging altermagnetic materials, which could enable high-speed, low-power

Photocatalysis Technology for Clean Fuel Production
Researchers have developed a powerful computational framework that could accelerate the
discovery of advanced materials for converting sunlight into chemical fuels, marking a signifi-
cant step toward sustainable energy technolo-
gies. The method focuses on polyheptazine
imides, carbon nitride materials capable of
absorbing visible light and driving chemical
reactions. These materials are promising for
applications such as hydrogen production,
carbon dioxide conversion, and hydrogen perox-
ide synthesis. The new framework helps predict
how structural variations and metal ion incorpora-
tion influence their optical and electronic behav-
ior, addressing a long-standing challenge in photocatalyst design. By simulating 53 different
metal ions and validating results through laboratory experiments, scientists achieved strong
agreement between theory and practice. This approach significantly reduces the need for trial-
and-error testing. The breakthrough could speed up the development of efficient solar-driven
systems for producing clean fuels and industrial chemicals, supporting a transition toward low-
carbon, sunlight-powered energy solutions for future technologies.

Buoyancy Tech for Future Marine Structures

modifies ordinary aluminum tubes so they remain
buoyant even after prolonged submersion or
physical damage. The method involves etching
the interior surfaces to form micro- and nano-
scale structures that repel water, keeping the
material dry. When placed in water, these treated
tubes trap a stable air bubble inside, preventing
flooding and ensuring continuous flotation. Even
when punctured or exposed to harsh conditions,
the tubes maintain buoyancy due to the trapped
air mechanism. Multiple tubes can be linked together to form raft-like structures suitable for
large floating devices such as vessels or buoys. Experimental results also demonstrate their
potential for harvesting wave energy to generate electricity, suggesting applications in sus-
tainable energy technologies and marine infrastructure development systems.
Soft Robotics Surface Technology
Researchers have developed a flexible material that can rapidly change its color and surface
texture in a way similar to cephalopod skin, opening possibilities for camouflage, robotics, and
advanced optical devices. The system is based on
electron-beam lithography applied to a swellable
polymer film that forms nanoscale patterns in its
structure. When exposed to water, the material
expands in controlled regions, altering its surface
topography and producing reversible shifts in
color and texture at scales finer than a human hair.
These rapid transformations occur within seconds
and can be tuned to create different visual and
tactile effects. Potential applications include
adaptive camouflage, flexible displays, nanophotonics, bioengineering interfaces, and sur-
faces with controllable friction for soft robotics. Future developments may enable automated
