Faisalabad - PASTIC services stall was organized at Faculty of Agriculture, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad on September 27, 2014 by PASTIC Sub-Centre Faisalabad. A large number of students / researchers and faculty members visited PASTIC stall.


Quetta - Another PASTIC services stall was organized at Balochistan University of Information Technology Engineering & Management Sciences, Takatu Campus, Baleli-Quetta on October 22, 2014 by PASTIC Sub-Centre Quetta. A large number of researchers/students visited PASTIC Stall.


Karachi - PASTIC Sub-Centre organized a PASTIC services stall at Mehran University of Engineering andTechnology, Jamshoro from October 22-24, 2014 during "3rd International Conference on Energy, Environment & Sunstainable Development (EESD 14)".


Peshawar - The PASTIC Sub-Centre Peshawar organized a PASTIC services stall at Institute of Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering (IBGE), The Agriculture University Peshawar on October 21, 2014. Students from B.Sc. Hons. to Ph. D level visited the stall. Another PASTIC services stall at Peshawar was organized at Home Economics College, The Agriculture University on October 28th, 2014.

Prof. Dr. Saleem Raza Samo, Pro Vice Chancellor, QUEST, Nawabshah visited PASTIC on October 28, 2014. Prof Dr. Akram Sheikh delivered a presentation on PASTIC Services. One Day Breast Cancer Awareness Seminar at Bannu Ms. Gazala Yasmeen Malik, Deputy Director, Peshawar Sub-Centre delivered a detail presentation on PASTIC Services during one day Breast Cancer Awareness Seminar at Bionor-Bannu on October 27, 2014. The activity was organized by IRNUM Hospital Peshawar. Doctors from local hospitals of Bannu and sudents from Bannu University of Science & Technology participated in the event.

Workshop on "Developing Industry Driven Technologies" organized at Faisalabad - October 23 2014

Pakistan Scientific and Technological Information Centre (PASTIC), Islamabad and Institute of Research Promotion (IRP), Lahore have planned to organize a series of workshops on "Developing Industry Driven Technologies" at universities across Pakistan to orient researchers about approaches and practices used in industry driven technologies as well as to train them how technologies are being planned, developed and commercialized. In this series a One day training Workshop on "Developing Industry Driven Technologies" at Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan was organized on October 23, 2014 by PASTIC SubCentre Faisalabad. Prof. Dr.Muhammad Ashraf, Vice Chancellor. Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Agriculture Multan was the Chief Guest and Mian Iqbal Hussain, President, MCCI, Multan was the Guest of Honor at the Inaugural ceremony of the workshop. 45 scientists of BZU a n d fr om o t h e r organizations/ institutions of Multan participated in the workshop. The workshop was based on case studies of industrial projects developed through identification, planning, lab works, pilot testing and roduction scale of different industrial products. Competent resource persons from academia and industry delivered talks and presentations.

MoU inked between PASTIC and MUET, Jamshoro - October 17 2014

Pakistan Scientific and Technology Information Centre (PASTIC), Islamabad & Mehran University of Engineering & Technology (MUET), Jamshoro, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for collaboration in the area of information exchange, sharing of library resources and joint events. The MoU signing ceremony was held at MUET, Jamshoro on October 17th, 2014. The Chairman, PSF Dr. Khalil Ahmad Ibupoto signed the MoU on behalf of PASTIC/PSF, whereas Prof. Dr. Muhammad Aslam Uqaili, Vice Chancellor, MUET signed on behalf of the MUET. The Director General PASTIC Prof. Dr. Muhammad Akram Shaikh witnessed the signing ceremony. As a result of this MoU, a PASTICMUET Information Desk has been set at the MUET Library & Online Information Center. Services will be provided from all information resources available in both MUET Library and PASTIC including databases, e-journals, e-books, publishers data, etc. PASTIC will also provide training to MUET Library staff for using PASTIC on-line resources. This cooperation and collaboration in sharing information resources of PASTIC & MUET, Jamshoro would enhance accessibility to the global information resources for the scientific community housed in the nearby universities in and around Jamshoro for promotion of R&D culture in the country through dissemination of scientific information.

2nd Workshop of the series on "Developing Industry Driven Technologies" at Faisalabad - 27 Sep. 2014

The second training workshop of the series was organized at University of Agriculture, Faisalabad on September 27, 2014 in collaboration with the ORIC, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. The Chief Guest in the Inaugural Ceremony was Prof. Dr. Iqrar Ahmad Khan (S.I) Vice Chancellor University of Agriculture Faisalabad whereas Dr. M. Akram Shaikh, D.G. PASTIC was the Guest of Honour. In the Closing Ceremony the Chief Guest was M. Amjad Khawaja, President Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturing Association (PHMA).

In addition to Director General PASTIC, Prof. Dr. M. Akram Shaikh and Vice Chancellor University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Prof. Dr. Iqrar Ahmad Khan Director ORIC, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Prof. Dr. Asif Ali Khan and about 50 faculty members and Researchers from various universities / R & D organizations also participated in the workshop.

The participants of the workshop learned how technologies are planned, developed and commercialized. They also learned about processes, fabrication and pilot test trials of market driven products. The workshop also included significant learning for research managers in terms of technology development process, transfer framework and enabling factors for successfull commercialization. Researchers finally have number of ideas (projects) with viable potentials as take away for their universities to develop and commercialize. The workshop was based on case studies of industrial projects developed through identification, planning, lab works, pilot testing and production scale of different industrial products.

1st Workshop on "Developing Industry Driven Technologies" Organized at Lahore - 22 Sep 2014

Development of Industry Driven Technologies - Sep 2014

The capacity building of scientists for conducting applied and commercialized research results in development of industrial technologies. In order to encourage the problem solving research, PASTIC has taken initiative for organizing workshops for orientation and capacity building of researchers and scientists for creating a culture of development of industry driven technologies. In this regard two workshops have been successfully organized at Peshawar and Faisalabad respectively. Another workshop is scheduled in September 2014 at Faisalabad. Three more workshops will be organized at Islamabad, Jamshoro and Karachi in last quarter of 2014. The workshops will be based on case studies and focused on orientation of researchers and scientists about the approaches and practices used in industry driven technologies, processes fabrication and pilot tests trials of market driven products.

PASTIC Stall at Ayub Agriculture Research Institute, Faisalabad - 20 August 2014

PASTIC Sub Center Faisalabad organized one day PASTIC Service stall at Ayub Agriculture Research Institute (AARI), Faisalabad on August 20 , 2014. Scientists and researchers of AARI, Faisalabad visited the PASTIC stall and showed interest in PASTIC services leaflets about PASTIC activities and services were also distributed among the visiting researcher and scientists.

Seminars and PASTIC S&T Information Services Stalls organized - July 2014

Pakistan Scientific & Technological Information Centre (PASTIC) organizes seminars and stalls at universities, conferences and exhibitions across the country regularly to create awareness aboutPASTIC S&T information Services among scientists, researchers, engineers, academicians, technologists and entrepreneurs. Such efforts result in boosting of S & T information dissemination andincrease in PASTIC member who benefit from provision of free on line services including email alerts, Technology Round Up, Current Contents and Fresh Arrivals of PASTIC Library on regular basis. In this regard, 24 Service Stalls were organized at various universities and organizations during financial year 2013-14. Two seminars and four workshops were organized in collaboration with Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry, KPK University of Engineering and Technology, University of Peshawar and Ayub Agriculture Research Institute, Faisalabad. Besides during 2013-14, 2226 S&T documents in print form and 27767 documents in digital form were supplied to scientists, researchers and R&D Worke rs. Also 88884 abstracts on various topics were supplied to 5175 users.

PASTIC Joins Hands with MUET to share Information Resources - July 2014

Pakistan Scientific & Technological Information Centre (PASTIC) has initiated effots for establishing liaison with Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MU ET), Jamshoro to share the Information Resources of MUET Library and Online Information Centre. In this regard, process for signing of Memorandum of Understanding between the two organizations has been initiated. Under this MoU, PASTIC and MUET will work together for promotion of research culture in Pakistan through dissemination of scientific information by using each other resources. Collaborative training programmes and seminars will be also organized under this MoU.

One-day Consultative Workshop at Faisalabad - 17 June 2014

A one-day Consultative Workshop on “Encouraging Problem-Solving Research Policy for Enabling Environment” on 17th June 2014 was organized at Ayub Ag ri c u l t u r e Re s e a r c h I n stit u t e , Fa is a l a b a d . Distinguished scientists and R&D workers of various S&T and R&D organizations from all over the Southern Punjab participated in the Workshop. Engr. Sohail Bin Rashid, President Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry with his executive body and Chairman PHMA also participated. There were 110 participants in the event. It was very interactive workshop and participants acknowledged the event very fruitful in respect of having new vision for making future research strategies.

Participation in a Focus Group Meeting with Pharma & Food Sector of Hattar Industrial State - 18 June 2014

The Commercialization Cell MoST organized a Focus Group Meeting with Pharma & Food Industrial Sectors of Hattar Industrial State, District Huripur in collaboration with Hattar Industrial Association on June 18, 2014. Scientists/Technical experts from organizations of MoST, PCSIR-Peshawar, NIE and representatives of Pharma and Food Industries participated in the meeting. Executive Director, Commercialization Cell, Dr. Syed Shahid Hussain, Deputy Director, Dr. Ahmed Bilal, In-charge Commercialization Cell MoSt, Peshawar, Ms. GhazalaYasmeen Malik & Deputy I n-charge Commercialization Cell Peshawar Muhammad Farhan Nasir were also present on the occasion. Dr. Syed Shahid Hussain in his presentation briefly informed the participants about the major objectives of the Commercialization Cell. He talked about the efforts of cell in establishing linkages with local industry and academic institutions for undertaking demand driven R&D, to solve the industrial problems and to develop indigenous processes by the public sector organizations. Dr. Inyat-ur-Rehman & Muhammad Seed gave brief presentations about the available facilities at PCSIR Laboratories Peshawar, in Pharma& Food Sectors and also about the process developed by the scientists of the Laboratories which are ready for commercialization. M r. A h m e d N a d e e m Siddiqui explained the audience about various activities and services provided by NIE to the industrial sector, especially in the energy audit that helps to save energy up to 50%.

Seminar on Intellectual Property Protection "Guidelines for Researchers & Industry" at Karachi - May 28, 2014

Pakistan Scientific and Technological Information Centre (PASTIC) Sub Centre, Karachi in collaboration with Faculty of Civil Engineering, NED University of Engineering & Technology, Karachi organized a one-day seminar on “Intel lectual Property Protection, Guidelines for Researchers and Industry” on May 28, 2014 at the Civil Engineering Video Conference Hall NED University, Karachi. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Afzal Haque, Vice Chancellor, NED University, was the Chief Guest, and Prof. Dr. Muhammad Akram Shaikh Director General, PASTIC was the Guest of Honour. The aim of the seminar was to create awareness about. Intellectual Property Rights and patenting of research amongst scientists, entrepreneurs and the SMEs and to deliberate on the importance of patents & their benefits in economic development. Expert speakers were invited from law firms. About 61 participant repnesenting academia, Industry, R&D organizations and the legal professionals attended the seminar. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Afzal Haque, Vice Chancellor, NED University said that IPRs cover assets (both tangible and intangible) which arise from people's creativity and innovation, or discovered / prospected & evolved over the year in particular geographical locations, while IPRs are now recognized as an important asset that qualifies for protection, its enforcement has always been a major problem. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Akram Sheikh, Director General, PASTIC, said that Indigenous knowledge is based on power of innovation. This is the need of the hour to promote innovat ion and patentability. He also said that the main objective of the workshop was to create awareness among scientific researchers and industrial community about the importance of Intellectual Property, especially Patent as a tool for economic growth and wealth creation.

National Conference on Sustainability in Process Industries (SPI 2014) - 22 May 2014

A one-day National workshop on Sustainability in Process Industries (SPI 2014), was held nd on 22 May 2014, at UET Peshawar. The workshop was organized in collaboration with C h emi c a l E n g i n e e r i n g Department, UET Peshawar & National Academy of Young Scientists (NAYS). Director General PASTIC Dr. Akram Shaikh and Vice Chancellor, UET Engr. Imtiaz Hussain Gillani were the guests of honor. Proceedings of the inaugural session started with recitation of the Holy Quran. Addressing on the occasion, Dr. Saeed Gul Head of Chemical Engineering De p a r tme n t / S e c r e t a r y Workshop welcomed the Director General PASTIC and worthy guests. He elaborated the aims and objectives of the Seminar, and thanked PASTIC /PSF & NAYS for organizing the workshop at UET Peshawar. Dr. Akram Sheikh, Director General, PASTIC, explained the role of PASTIC /PSF and emphasized the participants to take guidance f rom the PASTIC/PSF authorities during their research. He added that quality of research needs to be at par with the international standards and it can only be p o s s i b l e i f r e s e a r c h e r s concentrate on the problem solving approach. Engr. Imtiaz Hussain Gillani, Vi c e - C h a n c e l l o r , UE T Peshawar welcomed the Dr. Akram Sheikh, Di rector General, PASTIC and worthy guests. He appreciated the efforts of PASTIC/NAYS and advised the young engineers & facul ty member s to get maximum benefit from the workshop and also from PASTIC/PSF services. Prof. Dr. Arshad Hussain (HOD, SCMENUST Islamabad) delivered plenary lecture and elaborately talked on “Application of Membrane Technology for CO 2 Capture from Natural Gas.”

Technical session I was divided into three groups, first group focused on Bioprocesses which was chaired by Dr. Arshad Hussain and Co-Chaired by Dr. Jami l Ahmad. Prof . Dr. SulemanTahir UOG, Gujrat delivered key note speech on “Bio-Refinery: An Integrated and Sustainable Alternative to Fos s i l Fuel ,” whi le s ix e n g i n e e r s f r om NUST Islamabad, Faisalabad, and UET, Peshawar presented their work. While, second group focused on Energy Engineering-1. This session was Chaired by Dr. Noor Ul Amin and Co-Chaired by Dr. Waqar Ali Khan. Prof. Dr. ShahidRaza Mal ik, NFC IE&FR, Faisalabad, delivered key note speech on “Energy Crisis in Pakistan and its Solution.” During this session, six engineers from PCSIR, Ka r a c h i , S CME -NUS T Islamabad, Cherat Cement Nowshera, PARCO & UET Taxila presented their work. The third group focused on M O D E L I N G a n d SIMULATION and key note speech was delivered by Dr. Ishaq Ahmad, UET Peshawar about “Determination of Empirical Modeling Parameters for the Processing of Bauxite Ore.” In this group, six presenters were from UET Peshawar. Plenary Lecture 2 was delivered by Dr. Michael Harasek, TUWien, Austria via Skype. After this secession II was started and it was divided into two groups,first group focused on Energy Engineering-II, second on P r o c e s s a n d P r o d u c t Engineering. First group was Chaired by Prof. Dr. Suleman Tahir and Co-Chaired by Dr. Gul e Rana Jaffri. Engr. Waheed Ur Rehman, PCSIR, Peshawar delivered key note speech on “Forward Osmosis and Emerging Separation Techniques,” while, second group was Chaired by Prof. Dr. Shahid Raza Malik and Co-Chaired by Dr. Ishaq Ahmad and Prof. Dr. Suhail A. Soomro, MUET, Jamshoro delivered key note speech about “Prospects of Bioprocess Industry and Chemical Engineering.” Five presenters in each group presented their work from reputable organizations. Las t ses s ion was Panel discussion between University & Industry representatives. During this session a fruitful discussion was made between students, scholars and industrialists. The onference was wrapped-up by Dr. Muhammad Younas. A total of 50 Engineers and scientists attended the conference.

PASTIC organizes three Day Training Workshop on "Scientific Research Tools" - 07-09 May 2014

Pakistan Scientific and Technological Information Centre, (PASTIC), organized a 3-day training workshop on “Scientific Research Tools” at PASTIC National Centre, Quaid-i-Azam University Campus, Islamabad from May 07-09, 2014. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Akram Shaikh, Director General PASTIC delivered welcome address to participants of the t r a ining workshop. The Inaugural Ceremony was alsoattended by PASTIC Officers. The target participants of the t r a ining workshop we r e research scholars, employees of different organizations and faculty members of public sector universities especially l o c a t e d i n I s l ama b a d / Rawalpindi. Computer literacy wa s a pr e - r equi s i t e for selection of the participants. Thi r ty par t icipants f rom different academic, research and othe r organi z a t ions attended the said training workshop. The participants were trained in research tools such as EViews, STATA, SPSS, NVIVO, MS Excel, EndNote, Minitab, MATLAB, R Language, MS OFFICE & EXCEL, MStat C, Design Expert, DD Solver, Chem Draw, Zotero, Graph Pad, Prism, and Bio Stat. It was expected from participants to learn those research tools from the said training workshop in order to fully utilize them in their research work and professional endeavors.

Post-workshop assessment of the participants was also carried out to see their level of comprehension regarding course contents, resource person, hands on training session and over all workshop arrangements. All the participants found the training useful and felt that they had achieved course learning objectives already conceived by them before attending the said training workshop. The participants suggested that such training programmes should be organized for one week duration from 09:00 am to 04:00 pm and separate training workshops should be organized for students of different disciplines. At the closing of the workshop, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Akram Shaikh, Director General, PA S T I C a d v i s e d t h e participants to fully utilize the s a id sof twa r e tool s for accompl ishment of thei r research work and jobs. Consultative Workshop on Encouraging Problem-Solving Research - May 2014

A one-Day Consultative Workshop on Encouraging Problem-Solving Research R&D Policy for Enabling Environment was organized in collaboration with PASTIC, IRP, PCST and University of Peshawar. A total of 85 scientists attended workshop from all major S&T and Public/Private Universities of KPK. Dr. Khalid Khan, Additional Secretary for Higher Education Department( H E D ) , Government of KPK was the Chief Guest. The speakers were Dr. Tariq Bashir, PCST, Mr. Rehmat Ullah, IRP, Deputy Director, Commercialization Cell MoST, Mrs. Ghazala Yasmeen Malik, Deputy Director PASTIC Sub- Centre, Peshawar, Mr. Ishtiaq Kiani, Secretary General Hattar Industrial State, Mr. Abid Sohail, Directorate of Science & Technology (DOST), Dr. Jamsheed Shinwari, University of Peshawar and Muhammad Ahmed, CEO, KCL Pharma. Ltd.

Training Workshop on "Advance Quantitative Analysis Through SPSS & AMOS" Organized - April 4-5, 2014

PASTIC in collaboration with Institute of Research Promotion, Lahore, organized a 2-day training workshop on April 4-5, 2014 on the topic of "Advance Quantitative Analysis through SPSS and AMOS", at PASTIC National Centre, Islamabad. Eighteen participants from 15 S&T Organi z a t ions and Universities attended the training programme. Dr. Zeeshan Ahmad Bhatti, Iqra University, Islamabad and Mr. Muhammad Arshad, University of Lahore, Lahore, were the resource persons of training. During the inaugural ceremony , Director General PASTIC, Dr. Muhammad Akram Shaikh in his welcome address highlighted the activities of PASTIC and the objectives of the workshop. He said that PASTIC i s the pione e r organization in provision of S&T information services to scientific and researchers community of Pakistan since its inception. He further said that PASTIC also imparts training on modern aspects of information handling and management techniques by organizing workshops and training programmes for researchers, scientists and information professionals for preparing them to meet the challenges of this digital age. Additional Director (STI), PASTIC Mr. Muhammad Aqil Khan gave closing remarks of the event and appreciated the interest of the participants to learn and apply advanced techniques through SPSS and AMOS. The resource persons and participants were awarded shields and certificates, at the closing session of training workshop. The training on quantitative analysis through SPSS and AMOS was highly appreciated by the participants.
