About: Abstracting and Indexing Service

An abstracting and indexing service is a service that provides summary of documents and assign keywords to documents for search and retrieval. There are several abstracting and indexing services available today e.g., Science Direct, SCOPUS, PubMed etc

Type of Indexes: Indexing databases are of following types depending upon the resource type,

  1. Region based (PSA by PASTIC, etc.)
  2. Subject based (e.g., ZMath, PakMedinet, etc.)
  3. Publisher based (e.g., Scopus by Elsevier, etc.)

Abstracting and Indexing Service (AIS) of PASTIC was initiated in 1960 by bringing out an abstracting/secondary Journal entitled "Pakistan Science Abstracts" (PSA), serving as a secondary information source to give support to research and development activities of the country. Its online version is available in the form of a searchable database at
http://pastic.gov.pk/PsaSearch_.aspx. PASTIC AIS is the only service in Pakistan in the field of Science & Technology.
